Inside the Author’s Life: From Ideas to Finished Books

Students will learn the ins and outs of the writing process, from fleshing out initial ideas through editing and publishing. I share my personal writing journey, examples from my published works, and practical insights on the importance of creativity and discipline in the writing process, complete with a Q&A at the end. Most importantly, these visits can help students think more deeply about the stories they read and inspire a love of storytelling.

Using “Write What You Know” as a Springboard, Not a Box

Best For: Grades 4+, Writing Workshops

“Write what you know” was once very common advice given to aspiring writers, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to use this. In this interactive workshop, we’ll cover how using what you know (or what you’re passionate about) can help you write stronger stories that are more personal, detailed, and believable without limiting your creativity. By incorporating elements of your own real-life experiences, knowledge, and interests, you can make your stories even better, no matter what genre you want to write in.

Best For: Small to medium groups, Grades 4+

This presentation is ideal as a followup for a class that has already read one of my books. We’ll talk about the characters, setting, and inspiration behind the book, while also giving time for reader Q&A.
